Not every tool on day one, no. The better approach is to start with the few items you are most likely to use regularly, such as bonsai scissors, aluminium bonsai wire, wire cutters and a suitable bonsai growing medium.
General garden scissors and ordinary wire can sometimes get you through very basic jobs, but they quickly become awkward once you start working inside a compact canopy, shaping smaller branches or repotting into shallow bonsai pots. Buying a few purpose-made tools first usually gives you more control and helps you avoid replacing unsuitable equipment later.
If you are unsure where to begin, we recommend building your kit around the work your trees need now rather than buying everything at once.
For most beginners, we would start with bonsai scissors, a selection of aluminium bonsai wire and a bonsai wire cutter. Those three items cover a large amount of routine pruning, training and maintenance.
If you are also planning to repot, the growing medium becomes just as important as the tools. Bonsai roots are confined to shallow pots, so drainage, aeration and moisture retention matter more than they do in a standard garden container.
That is where products such as Japanese Akadama soil and other mineral growing media become useful. You do not need a complicated setup, but you do need a substrate that suits the tree, the pot and the way you water.
Ordinary potting mix is designed for general container growing, while bonsai often benefits from a more open, structured root environment. Akadama is a granular Japanese growing medium that can help create air space around the roots while still holding moisture within the particles.
That balance is important in bonsai because shallow pots leave less margin for error. A mix that stays too wet can reduce root-zone aeration, while one that drains too aggressively may dry faster than you can manage in warm Southeast Queensland conditions.
Akadama does not have to be used as a one-size-fits-all solution. It can be used on its own in some growing approaches or combined with other mineral components to adjust drainage and moisture retention. If you are choosing between Akadama and a conventional potting mix, the better question is not “Which one is best?” but “Which one gives this particular tree the root environment it needs?”
The wire needs to be strong enough to hold the branch in position without being unnecessarily heavy. Fine branches generally need finer wire, while thicker or less flexible branches require a heavier gauge.
That is why we stock aluminium bonsai wire across multiple sizes rather than one universal thickness. Having a few different gauges available makes it much easier to match the wire to the branch you are working on.
If you are starting out, you do not need every size. Choose a small range that suits the trees in your collection, then add heavier or finer wire as your needs change. The important part is using wire that holds the branch securely without making the job harder than it needs to be.
Bonsai scissors are excellent for fine pruning, but they are not designed to handle every job.
A wire cutter is made for removing training wire in controlled sections. A concave cutter is more suited to specialised branch removal. A knob cutter helps with more detailed refinement work, while a root cutter is built for stronger root work during repotting.
Trying to make one pair of scissors do all of those jobs can be frustrating and may put unnecessary strain on the tool. You do not need to buy every cutter immediately, but once you begin doing more advanced pruning, wiring or repotting, the right specialist tool usually makes the work easier and more controlled.
The sensible approach is to add tools as your bonsai work develops.
The advantage is convenience, product range and being able to buy specialist bonsai supplies alongside the rest of your garden needs.
At Ashi Homes & Gardens, we stock bonsai tools, aluminium bonsai wire, Japanese Akadama and specialist growing media in one place. For customers around Underwood, Logan, Brisbane Southside, the Gold Coast, Redland Bay and Ipswich, that means you have a local option rather than relying entirely on interstate specialist stores or ordering each product from a different supplier.
You can also build your kit gradually. Start with the essentials, then add specialised cutters, heavier wire or different growing-media components as your trees and techniques develop.
If you are unsure what to buy, tell us what tree you are working on and what job you are trying to do. We can help you narrow the choice down so you are buying something useful, not simply adding another tool to the drawer.
